Spin (Robert Charles Wilson) is a well written, big ideas sort of modern SF. It's a great journey through a bunch of neat ideas.
Tragically, when you get to the end of the journey, it turns out that you have arrived in Albany.
It's not that Albany is actively awful. But having driven through the exotic wilds of Africa and leapt over giant waterfalls in a two-man raft to get there, you're very confused at your ultimate location.
